Up this morning contemplating the gentle way our Master moves us to shocking obedience. He never forced anyone to be martyred. No, He just becomes so important to us that we abandon even our lives for Him. We love Him more than life itself, need Him more, and desire Him more. As His children, we cannot bear the thought of life without Him. So, we'd rather die and join Him, than go on alone.
But what brings us to that point? It's the way He loves us, the incomprehensible way He keeps, provides for, guides, teaches . . . He literally woos our heart with His merciful love. Once His, we are become like husband and wife, in that to be separated from Him is to be cut in to, torn asunder. It is more painful than the fear of death, like having one's heart removed while still beating.
We know that death is a passing thing. Once it is accomplished, we will be with Him. Now, no one rushes to this, but we don't fear it, either.
Unlike the lost we aren't living because it is all we know. No, we live for Him, and we want to be good, productive children -- bringing the lost into the fold, and being His light in this darkness. We want to bring Him our gifts, our "refrigerator pictures". So, we want to tarry here as long as it pleases Him. It's just that when the time comes, we're not going to be kicking and screaming or wailing in fear. No, He has taught us to trust Him. So, we'll take His hand and enter that dark, unknown with joyous expectation, knowing He is waiting on the other side.
O, what a Master, this Savior divine!
